Finding his place in the IP world<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Carlos Northon’s publishing career spans more than two decades, although his introduction to intellectual property came around 2011. At the time, he was working at Newton Media on the well-established World Intellectual Property Review (WIPR). During his time there, Carlos also helped launch the company’s first dedicated intellectual property directory. It was an experience that introduced him to the international IP community and the opportunities specialist publishing could create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He particularly credits Nick Lipinski and the wider Newton Media team with inspiring his journey into the sector. Nick remains a good friend and someone Carlos can still turn to for advice and guidance. It’s an early example of something that has become a recurring theme throughout his career: professional relationships developing into lasting friendships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What initially attracted Carlos to intellectual property was its truly international nature. He enjoyed meeting professionals from different countries, cultures and specialisms, all contributing to the protection of innovation and creativity. As his experience grew, he recognised an opportunity to develop publications that went beyond reporting industry news. He wanted to create platforms where professionals could share their knowledge, gain international recognition and connect with people outside their existing networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That ambition eventually led to the establishment of Northon’s Media PR & Marketing and publications including The Global IP Magazine, originally The Global IP Matrix. For Carlos, publishing has never been simply about producing magazines. It’s about recognising expertise, encouraging conversations and bringing together people who might otherwise never meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The relationships that make a difference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, Carlos has worked with IP professionals from around the world. Although laws, cultures and business practices vary, he believes the foundations of successful professional relationships remain remarkably similar. Trust, mutual respect and genuine connections matter wherever you are. Conferences, publications and networking events offer opportunities to establish those relationships, sometimes leading to collaborations and friendships that last for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One particularly memorable example involves PatWorld and a conversation with Director Tim Parry during the early days of Carlos’s business. Carlos had known Tim for some time before establishing Northon’s Media. While working at Black Knight Media, he managed a publication called IP Pro, which is no longer in circulation. PatWorld was one of his clients, so the two had already developed a professional relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Carlos launched the inaugural edition of The Global IP Matrix, he exhibited at an INTA conference. He also organised a networking reception to introduce the publication and bring industry professionals together. Tim and Katherine from PatWorld attended to show their support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those early days were demanding. Carlos was handling almost every aspect of the business himself, from meeting clients and promoting the publication to organising events. Establishing a new publishing business required considerable time, effort and determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Towards the end of the reception, Tim approached Carlos and asked him to stay behind for a conversation. Carlos recalls Tim saying something along the lines of, “Carlos, when everyone has gone, come and have a chat with me. There’s something I’d like to discuss with you.” Naturally curious, Carlos agreed. Once the reception had finished and the guests had left, the two sat down over a glass of wine. What followed was a conversation Carlos has never forgotten. Tim told him he could see how hard he was working to establish the business. He recognised the effort involved and explained that PatWorld wanted to become a client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Carlos, it meant far more than securing another customer. At a time when he was building something from the ground up, someone he respected had recognised his efforts. Tim believed in what Carlos was trying to achieve and wanted to support him. PatWorld went on to become one of his longest-standing clients. Over the years, Carlos has continued working with Tim, Dean and the wider team, sharing experiences at conferences around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what makes the memory particularly special is how that professional relationship developed into a genuine friendship. Carlos laughs that after working with someone for so many years, introductions at conferences can sometimes become rather awkward. Do you introduce them as a client or a friend? Professionally, they’re a client, but personally, the relationship has grown into something much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s an experience he’s been fortunate enough to share with many people throughout the international IP community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Carlos, seeing relationships develop is one of the greatest rewards of his work. He particularly enjoys introducing professionals who subsequently collaborate, support one another or establish friendships of their own. His experience has reinforced a belief that extends well beyond publishing or business development. People may initially remember what you do professionally, but lasting relationships are built on how you treat one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Championing women in intellectual property<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The importance of recognising people and their achievements also inspired another significant development in Carlos’s career. In 2019, he launched the first edition of The Women’s IP World Annual at the AIPPI World Congress in London. It was an idea he had been considering for some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through his work at international conferences, Carlos met accomplished women leading law firms, building specialist practices and making significant contributions to innovation. Yet he noticed that conference panels, speaking opportunities and wider industry recognition were often predominantly male-led. He wanted to help bring greater balance to those conversations by creating a dedicated platform for women’s achievements, experiences and expertise. Women’s IP World was born from that ambition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since its launch, the publication has showcased professional achievements, personal journeys, leadership and the many different career paths available within intellectual property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Carlos, there’s something particularly meaningful about producing a publication that contributors can keep. He likes the idea of someone placing their copy on a bookshelf and revisiting it years later. Perhaps they’ll share it with their family or show it to younger colleagues entering the profession. It becomes a lasting record of an important milestone in their career. That sense of permanence is important to him. An achievement might be recognised at a particular moment, but its significance can extend much further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carlos has also seen encouraging changes across the IP industry since 2019. There are now more initiatives dedicated to supporting women’s professional development, leadership and representation. He particularly welcomes programmes and communities established through organisations such as INTA, AIPPI and AIPLA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, while progress has been made, he believes there is still plenty of work to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His ambition for Women’s IP World extends beyond recognising those who have already established successful careers. He hopes the stories will inspire students and younger professionals who are just beginning their own journeys. If someone reads about another woman’s experiences and feels encouraged to pursue her ambitions, Carlos considers that a meaningful achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As he explains, “For me, it is not simply about recognising success today; it is about celebrating the women who are shaping the future of intellectual property and ensuring their contributions become part of the industry’s lasting history.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking the next step with the Women’s IP Alliance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That commitment to recognition, professional development and meaningful connections is now inspiring Carlos’s next major project. The Women’s IP Alliance is scheduled to launch in January 2027. While Women’s IP World focuses on celebrating achievements and sharing professional stories, the Alliance is an entirely separate initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new platform will provide opportunities for direct interaction, mentoring, professional development and collaboration throughout the year. Carlos recognised that while the annual publication provides valuable visibility, there was an opportunity to encourage more direct interaction between professionals. The Alliance aims to create a community where women can exchange knowledge, develop relationships and support one another’s professional growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plans include peer-to-peer mentoring, educational webinars, knowledge-sharing sessions and networking events. Members will also have opportunities to organise their own webinars, contribute editorial articles and share their expertise with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carlos is particularly enthusiastic about involving students and those beginning careers in intellectual property. He wants them to connect with experienced professionals, build confidence and learn from people who have already navigated similar challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative is also developing international partnerships to provide access to selected industry events, educational resources and other professional benefits. PatWorld is pleased to be among those supporting the project, offering Alliance members preferential access to its Introduction to Patent Searching course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Carlos, though, the ambition goes beyond assembling a collection of membership benefits. He wants to create a community where people genuinely value their connections and feel comfortable seeking advice, sharing experiences and supporting one another. The early response has been encouraging, with women from around the world already registering as founding members ahead of the launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carlos is clearly enthusiastic about the possibilities. Having spent much of his career helping professionals connect through publications and events, he now hopes to encourage those relationships throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond publishing: a marathon and a new challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After years of international conferences, networking events and publishing deadlines, Carlos admits he’s become something of an introvert. It’s quite a change from his younger days, he says. These days, he’s happiest enjoying a good dinner, a bottle of Chilean red wine or simply switching off from work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, his plans for 2027 suggest there may not be much time for relaxation! Carlos is currently training for the TCS London Marathon, raising money for Make-A-Wish. The charity helps children with critical illnesses experience unforgettable wishes, and it’s a cause he is proud to support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Training for 26.2 miles is no small undertaking, particularly alongside running a busy international publishing business. Nevertheless, he’s determined to give the challenge his best effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the Women’s IP Alliance preparing to launch and marathon training well underway, Carlos certainly has plenty to keep him busy. It’s an exciting time, both personally and professionally, and he’s looking forward to the challenges ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Carlos’s career has taken him from specialist publishing to building international platforms that connect and celebrate IP professionals. Along the way, he’s formed friendships, supported new voices and helped create opportunities across the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet perhaps the most memorable part of his story is the importance he places on the people he’s met. From the encouragement he received early in his career to the connections he hopes to foster through the Women’s IP Alliance, that belief remains central to his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the Women’s IP Alliance preparing to launch and his London Marathon challenge ahead, 2027 promises to be a busy and rewarding year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
