Based in Hertfordshire, this boutique practice\u00a0blends UK and European patent expertise with mediation skills, empowering climate-tech founders to protect breakthroughs without the drama of drawn-out disputes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Supercomputers to Patent Powerhouse<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Veronika\u2019s path to IP was anything but linear: a physics degree from Charles University Prague, a PhD from Humboldt University Berlin, and post-docs spanning Japan\u2019s National Institute for Materials Science to UCLA and UCL. There, she delved into density functional theory simulations of complex materials and parallel programming, work that culminated in her proposing\u00a0and co-authoring the textbook *Atomistic Computer Simulations: A Practical Guide*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But academia\u2019s endless grant chase left her seeking more. \u201cI stumbled across patent law by accident,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI read up on it and I thought, that looks interesting. I could be good at this actually\u2026 And it\u2019s been much more fun than academia because as a patent attorney, I don\u2019t need to spend three years in a lab on a project that ultimately goes nowhere. I only get to hear from people who have done it and have been successful\u2026 I get to hear about all the cool stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, that means guiding start-ups through patents and disputes, always with a physicist\u2019s eye for the core invention amid the noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Launching a Practice with Purpose<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fresh from mediation training in 2024, Veronika founded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brazdovaip.com\/\">Br\u00e1zdov\u00e1 IP<\/a> to fuse patent strategy with conflict resolution. \u201cI realised that I wanted to do both mediation and patent law and I also wanted to create my own business according to my values and vision\u2026 to have the freedom to create and also to be able to focus on things that make a difference, because I am really focusing on climate tech, sustainable technology, shipping, decarbonisation. It\u2019s a hugely positive sector, people who are working on sustainable technologies are very enthusiastic about it and it\u2019s a wonderful practice area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her vision? A practice that\u2019s startup-centric, commercially savvy, and globally minded. From day one, she\u2019s zeroed in on climate tech, decarbonisation, and maritime innovations, sectors where enthusiasm runs high and the stakes for the planet are immense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fostering Empowerment Over Edicts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the core of Veronika\u2019s approach is client autonomy. \u201cI will not say to a client, you need to file a patent application. I will tell them if you\u2019ve got something here which you could file a patent application for. If you do, this is what is likely to happen\u2026 these are the timescales\u2026 if you don\u2019t file, then you might want to keep it as a trade secret\u2026 I don\u2019t tell them what to do because it is their business and their decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This stems from her dual worlds: academia\u2019s detail-dive and private practice\u2019s business grind. \u201cAcademics can be hopeless at running a business\u2026 the business side is often a secondary thing for them\u2026 but that will not get you to a successful business.\u201d She bridges that, helping founders pitch IP to investors. \u201cWith an IP audit report people can show investors that they have a solid IP strategy. An IP audit can get you multiples of its cost from investors \u2013 well, that\u2019s a huge return on investment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The UK\u2019s Green Tech Tide<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Veronika has a particular focus on the UK\u2019s growing sustainable sector. \u201cDecarbonisation is a huge thing now: retrofitting sails on cargo ships, offshore wind, tidal and tidal stream energy, carbon capture. Shipping is a big thing for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She sees the UK as a launchpad for interconnected innovation: \u201cthe future of sustainable technology is local solutions within a global network. Local doesn\u2019t mean isolated but interconnected. A distributed network is far more resilient than a centralised one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.brazdovaip.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/iStock-1435599334-2048x1365.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 2048px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 2048\/1365;width:510px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mediation: The Smarter Path to Settlement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Why pair patents with mediation? For Veronika, disputes are like icebergs, the stated fight is just the tip of the issue. \u201cWhen two sides are in dispute, they might seem to be polar opposites, but when you look deeper into it\u2026 you can often find that there is scope to resolve the dispute. Mediation is faster and far less expensive than litigation\u2026 typical mediation is one day or two days and the latest UK data show the settlement rate is over 90%.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Especially for start-ups: \u201cIf you fall out with your only supplier, you can take them to court. But what are you going to do afterwards, even if you win? If you negotiate a solution instead, you can agree terms that the court could never order \u2013 creative solutions that preserve the relationship. And you may still be able to work with that supplier in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Global Horizon for Blue Innovation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead, Veronika eyes international expansion. \u201cThe sustainable technology sector is international and interconnected and so is the IP sector. My practice is going to be international: I\u2019ll be looking at other countries in the future because there\u2019s a lot of collaboration going on between the UK and other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her goal? Local expertise in a global web, mirroring the resilient systems she champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Advising with Humility and Clarity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Veronika\u2019s north star? \u201cDo not assume. You must not assume that things are a certain way, because you don\u2019t know really, and you need to ask the client.\u201d And: \u201cPeople do business with people\u2026 it\u2019s important to be a good human.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For innovators: \u201cTalk to someone early on, as early as possible. Not doing it early on can be catastrophic down the line. Having an IP strategy will make you much more credible in the eyes of an investor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Harmonies and Horizons Beyond the Desk<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Recharging for Veronika means melody and mischief. She picked up the harp during her career switch: \u201cI started with the harp when I switched careers because I knew it was going to be extremely stressful. The harp is great because it\u2019s beginner friendly, so back then\u00a0this was my treat\u2026 to help my sanity. It still does.\u201d She added singing lessons during the pandemic\u00a0. This year?
